The-23-years-old is pretty and petite - 5 foot 4 with impossibly hair. She talented (she's acts), athletic (she was cheerleader and swimmer) and smart (all A's in collage). She was homecoming queen, for crying out loud. And she got the guy who just happen to be American Idol. Katy is the outgoing, focused wife and high school sweetheart of the quieter laid-back Kris Allen, 24, who won the eighth season of the popular television show.

She kind of woman who could inspire jealousy in other woman, except she just so darn nice. Friend, Heather Clarke, who has known Katy since fourth grade explain it. "You want to hate her, but you can't. I always said she was the girl who could do everything ... but she's the sweetest thing, and she's not conceited at all"

Exhibit A: She thanks everyone on the photo shoot repeatedly, hugs some goodbye, ask for an address so she can send the make up artist a thank-you note and apologizes for taking so long --- which she didn't. Part of it come from her upbringing. As southerners say "she was raised right"

THE EARLY YEARS

Katherine Elizabeth O'connell --- known as Katy to her friends, family and now the world --- was born July 9, 1986, in North Carolina to Peggy and Peter O'Connell, a school teacher and now-retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who is an instructor pilot at Little Rock Air Force Base. Katy has a brother, Tim, who is two years older than she and flies C-130s Little Rock Air Force Base, and 16-years-old twin sisters, Kristen and Megan.

Peter remember his firstborn daughter as "very social," a tiny gymnast with "little short bangs and bright, bright blond" hair. Katy's parent moved to Germany when she was a baby, and one of her father's favorite stories about his daughter happened there. "I don't think she was even 2 yet, probably a year, 1 ½, and she already talked very well," he says. She slept in a crib in the room with her brother. "She would climb out the crib, so the next morning we'd find her in the bed with Timothy --- he was 3 ½ or 4."

To keep her from hurting herself and from falling down one of several staircases in the somewhat unusual home, her father says they put an expandable gate on top of Katy's crib. "After a couple months, she [Peggy] started to leave, and little Katy looked up and said, 'Mom, uh, you forgot to put my gate up," he recalls. They decided then that Katy probably need her own bed, Peter says, laughing. "She was pretty precocious."

After three years in Germany, the family lived in Sherwood from the time Katy was 3 until 5, moved to Virginia and then back to Arkansas, this time to stay, in Jacksonville. Katy was 9 and in fourth grade.

Katy with Peggy (blue), brother, and aunt

Peggy, who talks in a fast, never-met-a-stranger way, says when she thinks Katy as a child, she thinks of her as "always going." "For me, my memories of Katy were, 'You want to do that, too? You already have this much on your plate,'" her mother recalls. "She took dance; we went to dance recitals," her mother says. Katy also took gymnastics and later become a cheerleader.

Although her mother was a taxi service in those years, Katy wasn't spoiled. If she wanted a pair of jeans her mother considered too expensive, "she'd pay half," Peggy says. And Katy usually knew exactly what she wanted. Determined is a word that pops up in conversation when anyone starts talking about Katy. Her father says she is an organizer, and when she get her mind made up to do something, "she goes to it."
"You should have been here last summer when we were getting ready for the wedding. She was handling all the details." Even Kris, on the couple's wedding website, described his longtime girlfriend as " a very determined person," along with "smart, beautiful and great to be around." When asked to describe herself in three words --- Katy chooses "determined" as one.

And although her husband is the current performer, Katy also has had dreams of being in the spotlight. "I remember being like 3, and maybe I was older than that, but I remember being a little girl and watching Shirley Temple and being obsessed with her --- she could sing and tap and and act. I wanted to be like her, except I couldn't sing. "So, I did the dancing and acting."
Katy also performed in Arkansas Arts Center Children's Theater plays, including "How To Eat Fried Worms" when she was in fourth or fifth grade. " The main character in the book swings out in a swing over the audience, and that's what Katy's role was. She started the play by swinging out over the audience. It was exhilarating," Peggy recalls.

Add to that, the soccer team and good grades in gifted and talented classes. Although she doesn't consider herself musical, Katy played the violin from fourth grade through her senior year and "wasn't horrible," she admits.

Henry Anderson Jr., who taught English language and composition at Mills High School, recalls Katy from his class. "She was outgoing, but she very structured and focused. If she didn't do well on an assignment, she wanted to know where she went wrong. She wanted to know, 'What do I need to fix?' She wanted to do well," and she did, he says.

Julie Dornblaser of Jacksonville and Katy were cheerleaders together at Mills High School. "We were as close as can be throughout high school," Julie says, adding that they served on Student Council and acted in Arts Center plays together too. "She's very, very outgoing and bubbly person. She's the one of those people where, even she's in bad mood, I'm not sure you'd able to tell it by the look on her face and what she says. She always seems to be in good mood and doesn't let things get her down"

KATY AND KRIS

Both Katy and Kris attended Collage Station Elementary School in Pulaski County Special School District, where Katy's mother is fourth-grade gifted and talented teacher. " They met in fourth grade on the playground," Peggy says, but it was few years before Katy notice Kris in a different way.

Katy says she and Kris' younger brother by 13 months, Daniel, were in he same grade and were on the Mills cheer-leading squad together. They ran around with the same group of friends, and Katy recalls the first spark of interest she had in Kris. "That summer I turned 15, I had birthday party at my house -- it was big birthday party, a birthday party with one of my other friends who had same birthday." There was a cookout in the backyard, and all the girls' friends, including Daniel, were invited, but not Kris. "Kim, Daniel's mom come to pick him up, Kris was with her. I remember thinking "Oooh, Kris Allen is cute," Katy says. They also played in the orchestra together and the attraction grew. "I couldn't tell you exactly what attracted me to Kris. He was cute, a nice guy, he didn't seem fake or overbearing," she says.

The Daniel invited Katy and other friends to the lake, but it turned out that just Katy was able to go. Daniel says he knows the exact moment "she fell in love with my brother." He recalls that they rode with his and Kris' parents, Kim and Neil Allen, and Katy sat between Kris and him. She and Kris started singing a song together, Daniel saw something connect. Katy says, "I remember that Coyote Ugly soundtrack (Interesting fact: "All She Wants to Do Is Dance" also part of the OST. Mhm, just saying :D) was really popular and, for whatever reason, Kim and Neil had that. I'm not a good singer - I was goofing off. I was probably making Kris really uncomfortable - he was kind of quiet."

"I had crush on him - and it turned into something else," she says. They've been together almost ever since. They did break up a couple times, "nobody really expects you to get married in high school", Katy says. In what Katy says was a mutual decision, they broke up during the second part of his senior year of high school, and Kris got a scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

The breakup didn't last long, even with the long-distance relationship. "Halfway through his freshman year of college, we were back together," Katy says and she was senior in high school.

Peggy says when Katy was in high school, "she begged us to let her go to a university in New York to study acting." Katy's mother says they put Katy off, saying, 'Oh, don't you want to do acting after you do some other career field with more stability?"

Katy says she wasn't going to go to collage based on where her boyfriend was and she enrolled in University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she received a scholarship. She majored in marketing, with a minor in psychology, was a founding member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority chapter and homecoming queen in 2007.

Kris proposed by leaving "do-you-remember-when?"- notes hidden under benches at the square in Fayetteville. She followed a series of five notes, then Kris appeared with a guitar and sang a song he wrote for her, which ended with proposal. They married in September (26) 2008, a wedding on the river in Maumelle at which Katy arrived with her father in a 1949 Cadillac.

The newlyweds moved into a loft apartment in downtown Conway. Katy got a job at Axicom in Little Rock and Kris was a worship leader at New Life Church in Conway and Little Rock. Kris had interrupted his collage career to focus on his music, but it didn't appear to be taking off. Then in July 2008, Kris went with his brother to American Idol tryouts and the road to stardom began.

THE IDOL EXPERIENCE

Katy says Kris wanted to earn a living making music. "I don't think he ever wanted to be a star," she says. "I think originally, he was, 'I want to write music. I want to make a CD." And he did that before making it on American Idol -- a CD called Brand New Shoes.

Katy had been telling her parent about Kris' talent since they started dating. Her parent admit, somewhat embarrassed that they didn't realize how good he was until he was on the show. "I feel a little guilty Katy tried to tell us all these years how talented he was -- we were like, 'Oh, that's nice dear.' I'm afraid we had to watch just like the rest of the country," Peggy says. Peter adds with a laugh, "Katy was always trying to get [Kris] to sing to us, because she thought he was really great. She would make him him sing a song for us. He sang at my mom and dad's 50th anniversary thing. He doesn't like singing in small group so we were all just kind of like, 'He's okay, but he's not all that great.'

"It wasn't until he put his album out - Brand New Shoes - we went to the CD release party. And we were used to this quiet kind of guy, and you get him on stage, and he's a whole different person. We were impressed we were like, he really does have some talent - an awesome ability with guitar," Peter continues.

"The Arkansas music scene isn't amazing," he says. "After a year, it didn't make sense to be playing in a bar for three hours with people not listening. I was ready to give up." Katy had other ideas. "She was like, 'No, I'll be your manager. I'll make this happen.' She would stay at the bar while I was playing until 2 in the morning." -- [Kris Allen @ People Magazine, June 8, 2009]
Peggy says she's a big fan, voted "diligently" after every show and loves all Kris' songs. Katy and Kris have a huge circle of friends, she says. "It was fun to be the mom of Katy - even though the show was about American Idol - I can't tell you how many people watched for Katy. We watched the show to get a peek of Katy as much as anything else," Peggy says.

Peter stayed home with the twins. Each Idol contestant was given four tickets per show, Peggy says, and Daniel gave up his tickets so Peggy could attend the Tuesday and Wednesday night show that week.
The man at the desk looked at Katy' driver's license and gave her two keys. Peggy says, "We just let ourselves in his room. It was like walking into a rock star's room. He had this huge keyboard, and on there was the music to "Apologize." It was so neat to see all of his little notes for all different parts of the song and his keyboard was still on. "She and Katy got the idea to surprise Kris, who was recording the winner song, "No Boundaries," by being in his room when he got back. "He had been up since God knows when that morning, and he comes in fresh as a daisy," Peggy says.

Peggy, like Daniel and Katy, was an Adam Lambert fan, too. "I talked with Adam several times. He said, "I know you want a pressure - let's go ahead and get it over," Peggy says. "Adam is as nice as a person as you saw on TV. Katy says if Kris hadn't made it, she would have rooted for Adam. "I love all of them, but Adam would have been my pick. I really admired his talent, although I think they were all talented and deserve success in life," Katy says.

Katy says Tuesday night, when Kris performed, were the hardest. "I was always nervous on the performance days - that really rattled me up - the pressure of one and 30 seconds and judges being able to say whatever they wanted in front of millions of people. I was never nervous on result show days," she says. The night Kris won, "I really was calm." Katy says she didn't doubt if Kris could get through the first round, he could make it all the way.

Although some people - especially newlyweds - might have trouble adjusting to being suddenly thrust in the spotlight, Katy has taken it in stride. "It has not been hard for me at all. I feel very, very lucky." Katy also says she doesn't led....... (<strike>unreadable</strike>) to Kris. It did bother her at first when people criticized Kris, but she says she quickly developed thick skin. " I don't read the blogs, I used to read them - I read them during the show, and the after the show I thought enough is enough," Katy says. "I don't look at all - I don't even get on a fan site for Kris. Back when Kris was on American Idol, and he showed up for five seconds on TV and everyone had this opinion that he was just this cute guy, [but] everyone can't say what they want. I think Kris going to prove them wrong. I think he has consistently proven people wrong".
THE FUTURE
(Now is very clear that they will live in Arkansas - edited). After six week sabbatical, Katy started back to work for Axicom in July.

She plans to take acting classes in Los Angeles and pursue acting "as much as I can." "I have always love to act since I was a young kid, and it's really great to be in LA where I can pursue it on bigger level." Katy says her favorite role was in a production called "Zastrozzi The Master of Discipline" at the University of Arkansas, "because it was really dark and twisted story. I thought it was to get to be something that was so obviously not how I am in real life. I liked challenge."
Her director in that production, Rex Austin, who taught theater this past year at a private collage in Georgia, says being the American Idol's wife might get her into auditions, but her talent will do the rest. "She has kind of natural talent for it and a knack for it, it's kind of hard to find," says Barrow, who previously lived in Los Angeles and acted in theater and film.

"She has that ability to draw people to her -- she is the one of those people who just draws your attention when she comes into the room." Barrow says Katy was unique in that she was "love interest" "She was great in it," Barrow says, easier to direct than some of the student who had take acting classes. "She was willing to try anything. She was in a choreographed fight with one of the other girls - a knife fight - she did very, very well, and I was surprised."
Peggy says people come up to her "all the time" worried about the young couple, but she assures them they're handling the pressure, especially her fearless daughter. "She's loving everything - this isn't scary at all for her." Katy says she get her confidence from her parents. "My parent were very big believers in teaching us to achieve and do a lot. Mom is the kind of person, she doesn't let stuff faze her. She's not afraid to be different. She knows what she wants. She knows who she is." Katy adds, "I might still be figuring that out."
She was a very involved young lady, was on swim team and took gymnastics and acting classes. "I just had a well rounded and happy childhood," Katy says, "and I'm grateful for that."
"We were in the orchestra together. He played the viola. I played the violin. We started really liking each other n the All-Region orchestra trip," she recalls. "He was into the band Creed at the time and one of the first song he ever sang to me was 'With Arms Wide Open.' He was just as incredible then he is now."
I figured he might ask me to marry him sometime after Christmas, so I was completely shocked when he did it on a random Thursday. He enlisted the help of my best pal Leeanne and asked her to take me to the square in Fayetteville. I thought that he was in Central Arkansas that night and had no idea that he had driven up that day. Leeanne told me that we were going to the coffee shop in the square to see one of her friends, but she pulled into a parking spot by a bench before we got there. She told me to go look under the bench and that she was leaving me there. The song ended with "will you marry me", and then he got down on one knee an asked me in 'non-singing' words. I of course said yes and he gave me the most beautiful ring. We took a few pictures and then drove home in the middle of the night to tell his family.

"We got engaged on the Fayetteville Square. I planned it and it was a surprise. She was going to school in Fayetteville, and she had no idea I was going to be there. A friend dropped her off at the square and I had all of these notes taped under the benches -- each one about a different part of our relationship because we had been together for seven years, and so it was very cool. She read all of them and at the last one, I was there." -- [Kris in Celebrate Arkansas Magazine, July 2009]

After graduation Katy joined Kris in Conway and began career at Axicom.

There were many highlights for Katy during American Idol journey. One that stands out most is when Kris made it to Top 3 round. "Being there that night and hearing them call his name was the best feeling," says Katy. "We were there with close friends, and we wanted Kris to be able to come home to Arkansas for hometown visit." Katy conveyed that she doesn't cry often, but this particular moment was emotional for her. Watching the competition in the audience week after week, Katy reveals that when Kris won, she was speechless. "I felt I couldn't breathe. In my head I kept saying 'he won the whole thing' The entire experience was surreal."

Life after Idol hasn't slowed down for the newlyweds. Now planted in her home away from home, Katy is spending summer with friends she meet during the show. "Kris is rehearsing and co-writing from morning until late at night," Katy says. "In the evening's we spend time together. This type of experience teaches you to live for the moment, because you really can't make a plan for future," she concedes. "I've always been a big planner and letting go of that has been good." Living life in the Hollywood spotlight can present challenges, but Katy is solid and unaffected. "I'm focusing on the positive and spending my energy on productive things."

In addition to spending time with friends, Katy is honing her acting skills. "I performed in plays at the Arkansas Art Center as a child,'' says Katy. "I continued that path in high school and collage, and it is a dream I've had all my life." Walking in the red carpet before the final show, Katy cinched the look of Hollywood starlet. "I've always joked that my goal in life is to play Reese Witherspoon's sister in a movie," she revealed. She is smart, beautiful, articulate, and chances are she'll achieve any goal she sets.
Our Q&A with Katy Allen!

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
After a very long wait, ITS FINALLY HERE! Our very own Question/Answer with Katy Allen!

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Just a note: All these questions we took were from over 150 questions. It was hard to narrow it down, but this is what we decided we liked, and here it is.

<blockquote style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I don't know if this is advice, but he told me once that I thought I could do anything I set my mind to. I know this sounds like fluff, but he really meant it when he said it, and so it has really stuck with me.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Kris is on the road a lot - what's the scariest thing you've had to do on your own?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I don't know that I've been actually afraid, but I can tell you that I have been frustrated a few times! Using a drill to hang curtain rods is not the easiest thing to do on your own! I ended up bribing my best friend's brother and his friend to come help me. : )

What would you consider to be your greatest strength and your greatest weakness? And Kris'?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
My greatest strength is probably my determination and focus when I really want to accomplish something. My greatest weakness is probably getting too stressed over things that don't matter in the long run. Kris' greatest strength is probably his ability to relate to and get along with people. His greatest weakness is PlayStation. : )

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Kris used the word "determined" to describe you. What would you attempt if you knew you couldn't fail?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
If I couldn't fail (or die in this case) I'd go hang gliding.

What type of acting roles are you interesting in doing? Do you prefer to do comedy, action, drama, etc?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I think I will have the most luck with comedy because I've been studying it and it's what people tend to see me doing. In all honestly I'd really love to do drama the most. I'd love to do the Rachel McAdams in the notebook type stuff (Yes, please! - edit). I'm OK with doing anything though. I like it all.

How do you feel about the song, Red Guitar? How come you never decided to learn how to play it? Do you think one day you will?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I love the song. I really love my red guitar. I took my bridal pictures with it I loved it so much. When he wrote it I was so excited to have a song about my guitar that I didn't even think about it being about me for a while. When he first wrote it, the song had this very folksy sound to it. I liked it back then, but I love it even more now that it sounds the way it does. It's really good live too. I actually think it's the best live song from the whole CD. And now here is the truth... I can play that guitar! I know four chords: A, C, D, and G. : )

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
What do you think is the biggest misconception people have had about Kris?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I think early on a lot of people couldn't see his personality. Kris is more subtle, so I think it took a while for people to catch on to what he was all about as a person and a musician. (Yes, he HAS A LOT of personality)

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
What is the best piece of advice Kris has ever given you?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I don't know if this is advice, but he told me once that I thought I could do anything I set my mind to. I know this sounds like fluff, but he really meant it when he said it, and so it has really stuck with me.

What kind of cologne does Kris wear?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
He doesn't really wear it. He had this one cologne that he wore for maybe a few days. I couldn't even tell you the name because he lost it. (Things get lost a lot on tour I have learned.)

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Where do you shop? You're such a fashionista!

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
The funny thing is, I really don't shop much. I have a habit of only buying clothes if I have something I'm going to. So if I have something to do at night, I'll going shopping at whatever store is nearby or convenient that day. I do love Urban Outfitters though.

"If your plane fell out of the skies, who would you call with yourlast goodbye?" and why?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
This question is cute and depressing at the same time. : ) The easy answer is Kris because we rarely fly together. I'm always flying to meet him somewhere.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Both you and Kris seem to be a very giving couple. Are there any particular charitable projects that you two are planning for the future?

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
We talk about it a lot. We are both very passionate about things in Africa whether it's poverty, education, or AIDS. We have both been to several countries over there, and we plan to go back. I would really like to do something with education in Africa, because I think when you educate a person you give them the power to help their own situation more than you could yourself. I know Kris has also talked about doing something with the arts in public schools. A lot of times music and other arts programs get cut from public school because of funding problems. Doing something to help with this problem is definitely one of our goals.

It's easy to forget how much of a life changing experience one's journey on "American Idol" can be. In the matter of weeks, you are taken away from your community, your friends, your family, even your job or school and thrown onto TV's most watched program to be scrutinized by the world. With season eight of the competition here and gone we have heard "American Idol" winner Kris Allen talk about his "Idol" experience and debut album quite frequently. But, very rarely have we seen Kris' wife, Katy, open up to the media. We here at AI Now were lucky enough to experience just that recently. Below you will find Katy's thoughts on Kris' journey on the show, his debut album and what day-to-day life is like with the man who is now a household name. Our sincerest thanks to Katy and everyone at 19 Entertainment for the Q&A.

I really wish "Alright With Me" could be the next single though. Everyone worries whether or not it's good for radio. This is a valid concern, but I think it says the most about Kris' style as an artist.

Yes. His clothes are tighter, his hair is more spiky, and he has become very witty with all his practice on twitter. : )

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">First of all, how much of the last twelve months has actually sunk in and what are the positive and negative aspects of the post-"Idol" exposure?
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">I think it's all sunk in pretty well. When you go through "Idol" it's actually a lot more gradual than people realize because of how long the tryout and competition process really is. We have had a lot of time to process things from the initial try out to where we are today.
The positives are Kris getting to do what he loves as his job and me getting to be out here to do acting. The negatives are the time apart and the lack of knowing very much about how the future will be.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Let's start at the beginning, when Kris first tried out in Louisville. Did you push him to audition and how far did you honestly see him going in the competition?
A. No, I didn't push him at all. I actually didn't have super high expectations because I had had several friends who sing just as well as Kris try out and not even make it through the first round. I knew that it was a lot about luck in the beginning, and so I didn't think too much about it at all. I did have a feeling that if he could ever make it to Hollywood he could do really well though.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">For the first several weeks of "Idol," Kris received virtually no air time. What was that like for you and the rest of the Allen family watching the show and pulling for Kris?
It was frustrating to be honest. By that point we knew he had already made it to the top 36 so we couldn't understand the lack of airtime. He had given very solid performances in Hollywood, so it was hard to reason out why we were never seeing him. I had the feeling that he just wasn't really a favorite in the eyes of the people editing the show. We knew that it all came down to the top 36 performance, so I think we all felt there was a lot of pressure on that day.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

After "Idol" aired some footage of you and Kris in the kitchen, Idol judge Simon Cowell said he thought Kris should have held off on highlighting your marriage. What was your reaction to that?
Well that was a huge misunderstanding that kind of got turned into something funny. I was not mad at Simon for saying that, it was more of a 'Crap, I hope he isn't right!' look. I'm very expressive, so it probably seemed like more. The producers of the show were the ones telling us what to do in that segment. We got to be good friends with Norm, one of the producers, and he was joking around with us saying 'come on, you have to put the aprons on!'... I was always hesitant because I didn't think I should be in the picture too much at first.

What do you think was Kris' best and worst "Idol" performances and why?
Best is without a doubt "Ain't No Sunshine" during the finale. He did so good the first time and even better the second. Worst...I guess "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" because the concept didn't really come across for that song. A lot of people in Arkansas know that song. It's played a lot there, but I think it was really unknown to the general public. Also the sound through the TV was a little off and you could not hear the electric guitar rifts Kris did which I think were the coolest part, and then there was that pit of death. I think several factors just came together and made it an unlucky choice.

Without a doubt, Kris is one of the most humble "Idols" we have ever seen. How has he managed to stay grounded throughout this experience?
It hasn't been hard for him. Being an "Idol" without a ton of coverage throughout the show is a lot of hard work. When you are working hard and focusing on your music I think it's easy to stay grounded. He just doesn't have a personality to ever take himself too seriously. I never worry about him becoming too caught up in anything.

Very often it's family and friends that are the biggest critics, so we have to ask you about your thoughts on how Kris' album turned out?
I like a lot of things about this album. I like how lyrically it's very honest and true to Kris. I like how he was able to write and co-write a lot. I love how he has a solo writing credit on there. I really like how it doesn't all sound too poppy ("Is It Over," "Alright With Me," and "I Need To Know" are great examples of this). I really like how he was able to put "I Need To Know" on there because it's so raw. I think an "Idol" getting to do something like that is awesome.
As far as what I don't like, well I hope the next album can have even more of the 'Kris Allen' sound on there. If you listen to "Brand New Shoes" you will know what I mean. Kris does the funky/acoustic thing really well and also emotes really well, two things I think his second album will have more of. I think this was an awesome first album though, and that it was a really good learning experience that will make the second one amazing.

What is your favorite song on the album and why?
I feel like I give a different answer every time I'm asked this. Today I'm going to go with "Is It Over." I think this song has to grow on people because its not overtly catchy or obvious. But, the vocals are some of the best I've heard from Kris, the lyrics are super meaningful, and I like the bluesy tone.

Is there a song that he recorded that you wish would have made the cut?
Yes. I wish the original version of "The Truth" was on there. It was more piano driven and I loved it. But everybody else involved loved the one with more guitar so that is what they went with. Also, the day before the album was wrapped he recorded a song that he started writing with Tobias (the guy he co-wrote "Let It Rain" with.) I really hope it makes the second album. It's exactly that funky/acoustic thing I was talking about before.

Kris has mentioned that at times working on the album was very frustrating. Did he always leave work at work or did he talk with you about it sometimes? If so, what did he say and how did your respond?
We talked about it a lot. I felt like it was especially hard at the beginning because there was the huge question of what the album should sound like. I think this was the thing we talked most about because Kris could go in so many directions. I think towards the end of the process he came to a strong realization of who he was as an artist and who he wants to be in the future. I think that when he starts working on the second album (which he already has since he and Cale write all the time) there will be so much less frustration. But I think he had to go through what he did. It was a process that he needed to learn from.

If you could pick Kris' next single today, what song would you pick and why?
I would pick "Before We Come Undone." Every single person I have talked to thinks it should be the next single. They all think it's the most radio friendly and the most catchy. I think there is something to be said for listening to what others have to say. Our friends represent the listening public so they probably know best. I really wish "Alright With Me" could be the next single though. Everyone worries whether or not it's good for radio. This is a valid concern, but I think it says the most about Kris' style as an artist.

Do you and Kris pay any attention to internet rumors? How about music charts?
No. I don't do the media. I don't read blogs, I don't get on fansites, I don't read gossip magazines, and I don't look at charts. It's a conscious decision I made right after he won. I spent so much time during the show doing all these things, and it was so draining. You can read ten nice things, but the one bad thing will really bring you down. Kris has started to be the same way, he rarely reads stuff. That's also why I barely follow anyone on twitter. People on twitter tweet a lot of media type information so I unfortunately have to stay away from that too. At this point charts and sales aren't even in our control so I don’t follow that. Kris doesn't either. He is focused on giving the best shows and interviews he can and writing the best music for his second album he can. Those are things in his control, and we try not to pay attention to the other stuff.

Do you notice any differences between pre-"Idol" Kris and post-"Idol" Kris?
Yes. His clothes are tighter, his hair is more spiky, and he has become very witty with all his practice on twitter. : )

We have heard that Kris can be a bit picky about what he wears, is it a relief to not have to shop for him much anymore?
Yes! I remember one time I picked out an outfit for a top 36 photo shoot, and he wouldn't wear it and said I was trying to change him. Then the stylist picked out the same outfit and he had to wear it. : )

Do you see kids in the Allen family future?
Yes. We are both huge fans of kids. It's just not a good idea now. Kris travels too much and I have the acting thing going on. Maybe after album 2. (means soon...-edit)

Finally, since we are quickly approaching the holiday season, tell us, what will the holidays will be like in the Allen family?
I am soooo excited about the holidays! We are going to Seattle for a few days to see my family there (I have an aunt and uncle that live up there, and my whole family is doing Christmas there this year), and then we head to AR on Christmas day. We have so much fun stuff planned in both places. In Seattle I think we will just see all the sights because we have never been. In AR we will do Christmas eve on Christmas night (the whole pajama/board game thing) and then we will do Christmas dinner and our annual Christmas movie the day after Christmas. We are also going to Vegas for New Years because Kris has a show.

Do you and Kris still exchange gifts? And if so, what are you both asking for?
Yes we still do. Kris isn't really asking for anything, but I know exactly what I'm getting him. It's pretty cool, and I got the idea from that twitter contest. I'm not asking for anything, but Kris likes it that way because he likes his gifts to be a surprise.

Questions from AI Now viewers:

Did Kris pick up any good or bad habits from the other guys while on tour this past summer? - Jean
Hmmm... is twitter a good habit or a bad habit? ;)

We've heard alot from Kris about how his parents influenced his life. How have your parents influenced your faith and values and what have you learned from them that you hope to pass on to future generations? - Risa
I am seriously like an exact mix of my parents. My dad is super driven and very goal oriented so I hope to be that way and pass it on. My mom is super accepting of other people and very trustworthy. I hope I'm like my mom in that way and that my kids will be too.
How many plaid shirts does Kris own and do you have any of your own? - Bia
Oh gosh, he has so many I can't count. I think there are 7 hanging in the closet now and that doesn't count the ones in the dirty clothes or with him on tour. I have three and I wear his a lot to sleep in but only when he is gone otherwise he gets mad.(Editor's note: It's okay Katy, we won't tell!)

Who does the cooking at your home? And, what are the common dishes? - Carolina
Kris did all the cooking before "Idol." I'm the worst cook ever. He still will cook if he has time. We travel so much that we eat out a lot. Kris makes awesome Chili. I think that is his best thing. I did make his spaghetti recipe recently and it turned out great, maybe I can learn afterall.

Hmm, pre-“Idol.” I would probably wake up as my wife left for work, clean up the house a little bit, hang out with my friends, get some lunch with ’em, get a workout in, maybe play a little music in the house. If so, what kind are you thinking about? - Dara
Kris wants a dog. It's not practical now because of how much he and I travel, but I think when we have kids we might get a lab. Kris also wants one of those french bull dogs that I think Martha Stewart has.
Are the acting rumors true or just rumors? And, how's the supposed Bloodstone Diaries filming coming along? - Mary
Those rumors are true. I recently signed with an agent and have tried out for a couple of films. I haven't gotten anything yet, but I'm still auditioning. I also study with a really good teacher out here that I love. I'm finished with Bloodstone, but I think it's still in post production.

You recently joined twitter. How has that experience been so far? - Lily
It's been pretty fun. Like I said before, I don't really follow others for personal reasons, but i do like to read responses and always try to direct message people back when I can. (I am following the 12 winners of the contest because they had to direct message me their addresses.)

Does Kris have any annoying habits? - Gerry
Yes, sometimes when I'm trying to talk to him about something he will just sit there and pick on his guitar. It will be totally obvious that he is in another world. Oh well, I guess that's what you deal with being married to a musician.

Are Kris's text messages to you sometimes as random as some of his tweets are ;). - Louise
Actually no. This is a funny question though. We generally just text pretty normal things. I think I'd like that though..... getting random funny things would be fun. Someone should tell him to do that.
Yes I have. I love both Adam and Allison. They are both good friends and amazing singers so of course Kris and I are going to follow their careers.
Do you plan to go on tour with Kris this coming year? - Miriam
I plan to go a little bit. I will just have to play it by ear, but I'm sure I will take a week or two off here and there to go on the road. I've never slept on a tour bus, so I'm pretty excited to do that!
"She has things she's passionate about," he replied. "She will start doing those things. I believe in her just like she believes in me." - Kris Allen

...And although her husband is the current performer, Katy also has had dreams of being in the spotlight. "I remember being like 3, and maybe I was older than that, but I remember being a little girl and watching Shirley Temple and being obsessed with her - she could sing and tap and and act. I wanted to be like her, except I couldn't sing. "So, I did the dancing and acting."

Her first role - when she performed at Arkansas Arts Center (Little Rock) - was Susan in a production of Romana The Pest. "That was one of my favorite childhood memories," she said."My mom would put those really big curlers in my hair so I would have ringlet curls just like the character." Katy also performed in Children Theater plays, How To Eat Fried Worms, when she was in fourth or fifth grade. " The main character in the book swings out in a swing over the audience, and that's what Katy's role was. She started the play by swinging out over the audience. It was exhilarating," Peggy recalls.

Peggy says when Katy was in high school, "she begged us to let her go to a university in New York to study acting." Katy's mother says they put Katy off, saying, 'Oh, don't you want to do acting after you do some other career field with more stability?" Yes, she decided to follow her mother advise but she didn't stop trying, "I continued that path in high school and collage, and it is a dream I've had all my life."

Katy says her favorite role was in a production called Zastrozzi The Master of Discipline at the University of Arkansas, "because it was really dark and twisted story. I thought it was to get to be something that was so obviously not how I am in real life. I liked challenge."

Her director in that production, Rex Austin, who taught theater this past year at a private collage in Georgia, says being the American Idol's wife might get her into auditions, but her talent will do the rest. "She has kind of natural talent for it and a knack for it; it's kind of hard to find," says Barrow, who previously lived in Los Angeles and acted in theater and film.

"She has that ability to draw people to her - she is the one of those people who just draws your attention when she comes into the room." Barrow says Katy was unique in that she was "love interest" "She was great in it," Barrow says, easier to direct than some of the student who had take acting classes. "She was willing to try anything. She was in a choreographed fight with one of the other girls - a knife fight - she did very, very well, and I was surprised."
PHOTOSHOOT
Here is a sneak peak of Katy Allen’s photo shoot. Katy had the fabulous Beth Wilson styling as well as her entourage so the group made for a lot of fun. Got some great shots that I think will give Katy a nice kick start in her acting endeavors. Thank you to Ben for letting us use his studio last minute as we got rained/clouded out of our outdoor shoot. Katy has a great personality and is naturally entertaining. I have a feeling she will do great in LA!

With the American Idol tour starting this weekend, it's amazing I had some time to catch up with Katy Allen, wife of winner, Kris Allen. Of course, I was crazy-excited to get a chance to chat fashion with her because Katy has always looked super-chic on the show! So how long does it take her to get ready and how does she shop? I've got the answers for you here (who knew Kris was so picky?!)!
From Kris's Interview:
Now that he has been named the new "American Idol" champion, Kris Allen says he wants to enjoy his marriage life with wife Katy Allen. Interviewed by E! News backstage after being announced as winner of "American Idol" eight season on Wednesday, May 20, Kris Allen said he is longing to enjoy his married life with wife Katy Allen, whom he married to in September last year. "We haven't been able to be married for the last nine months," he said. "She's amazing. She's just the coolest chick in the world. Hopefully, me and my wife will get to spend some more time together." - aceshowbiz

Who is your American Idol and why?
"My American Idol is my wife. I know that is cheesy, but she works her tail off everyday for us. No-one knows what she has done for me and she is the greatest person I know." - suite101

Kris Allen has never hidden the fact that he was married in order to get the young female vote. In fact, he was very proud to show his wife off throughout the American Idol competition. Now he has let us in on some of their wedding details (with 400 guests) and how he really feels about his bride of 8 months.

“We have a lot of family and friends, and we didn’t want to leave anybody out,” Allen says of his wedding, which took place at sunset on the Arkansas River. “We set out 300 chairs and people were standing up!” At the reception, which was catered by Katy’s grandmother, Allen sang the same song that he auditioned with: “A Song For You.” “We just had a blast,” he says of the day.

“She’s been my best friend for a long time,” Allen says of his wife, Katy, who he began dating his junior year of high school. “She’s the coolest chick in the world.”

They make a beautiful couple, and I really hope and pray that their marriage stays the #1 priority in the midst of all the craziness. It can definitely be done, and they seem rock solid… We wish them the best of luck! - backseatcuddler or 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Idol Winner Kris Allen
The first published blog about Katy during Idol...remember? Yeah, Kripples 4 Kris. They even had lunch together, so much fun. Let's hear the story again, shall we

Mrs. Tenderdog!

So I went to American Idol a few weeks ago and got to be an honorary member of Kris Allen's family...

Kris's wife Katy and I hit it off immediately since I had come bearing my "Kripples 4 Kris" sign and, since they're 90% certain they'll be settling down in LA once all this Idol craziness is over, she happened to be in the market for headshots.

Today she came over for her session and brought along her friend Alex who you may remember as being kicked off in the Top 36...

We took some cute pictures.

And I just added a new layout to my website: www.dkheadshots.com

We drove by the American Idol billboard where they paint a big blue "X" over each eliminated contestant every week (which we contemplated climbing in order to draw a big heart around Krissy...)

And then had a scrumptious lunch at Bossa Nova.

Katy reminds me of Reese Witherspoon and is such an awesome girl. I can totally see how she scored our future American Idol.

She gave me the inside scoop on Idol and all the fun backstage gossip.
Hoping to end up back at the show soon!
She enjoyed collage life and made her mark on campus when she crowned homecoming queen in 2007. "It was a great experience because you are chosen for your involvement and the impact you make on campus," she says. "The university was looking to expand sorority life and had several national chapters come and make presentations. She also no stranger to being in the spotlight or having people cast vote for her. While attending University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, she was voted as homecoming queen during her senior year - an honor she credits to her sorority sisters. "They campaigned hard core for me" she said. When Alpha Omicron Phi decided to start chapter on campus, she become charter member and recruitment chair for their first year, "It was the hardest thing I do in my life but it was worth it", she said. - Woman (WWW)
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
Katy Allen, Kris Allen’s wife, is certainly beaming with pride for her husband this morning. The beautiful blonde from Arkansas had been present every week of the American Idol competition to cheer her husband on. Kris said, “She’s going to have her own life for the summer. But we’ll be keeping in touch a lot.”
After winning the American Idol title last night, Kris Allen was asked what Katy thought of his win:

“We actually didn’t say anything,” he revealed. “We were just hugging each other and we’re just like, uh, we can be married.We haven’t been able to be married for the last nine months,” he said. “She’s amazing. She’s just the coolest chick in the world. Hopefully, me and my wife will get to spend some more time together.”
